9. The Border

Episodes seven and nine are the past. Eight and ten are the present. That alternation is the structure of the novel too, and it is the thing reviewers argue about most. Fiona Y, reviewing the book on NetGalley on 1 November 2025: 'This is a novel with two plot lines that were so far apart I had to suspend belief that the two were connected.' Victoria, Goodreads, 21 December 2025, described the same structure without minding it: 'The book alternates between the past, when Vân was traveling, and the present, when she attempted to escape.'
Rubie C, NetGalley, 8 January 2026, on the present-day half: 'every frantic mile in that battered Nissan Micra ramps up the stakes without ever feeling contrived.'
Start with the trailers if you want ninety seconds of it before committing. Start with episode one if you do not. Episode ten is where it is up to, not where it ends.
The book is in paperback, ISBN 106847632X, at £11.95, hardback 1068476338 at £17.99, and ebook at £3.99. The sequel is The Cuckoo House, ebook, £3.99.
